The Winstars 12U Purple Fastpitch softball team had the opportunity to represent the Winona area in the Minnesota State Softball Championships that were held from July 12-14 in Edina, Minn.
The Winstars opened Saturday’s play with a 12-0 rout over Ritchfield. Game two did not go Winona’s way, as the team was slapped by a 3-2 loss to St. Anthony. The girls got back on the winning track, though, and scored a dozen runs to end Saturday’s play with a 12-0 win over St. Francis. On Sunday, the heat was brutal as the Winstars wiggled their way up through the losers’ bracket starting with a 9-1 pounding over Stillwater. The Edina Hornets were the next to fall, 9-4. In the rematch with St. Anthony the Stars showed no mercy with a 11-2 whipping. Next the girls outscored the Edina Sting 9-5. The girls finally found their way to the championship game, where they were edged out of the top spot with a 5-0 loss to undefeated New Ulm.
The Winstars next action will be on July 18-21, where they will represent the area at the North American Fastpitch Affiliation Northern Nationals in Eagan.
