Whitewater State Park program schedule

All programs, classes and events meet at the Whitewater Valley Visitor Center unless otherwise noted.

H.O.P. (Healthy Older People) into the Park

Wednesday, August 14, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This month, H.O.P. will hear from environmental entomologist Jessica Miller about dragonflies and what they can tell people about water quality in Minnesota.

Nature time at the beach

Thursday and Friday, August 15 and 16, 1-2 p.m.

Hey kids! Join a naturalist at the beach for a fun, hands-on nature activity each Thursday and Friday through Labor Day weekend. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Marnach House hike

Friday, August 16, 4-6 p.m.

Hike into the past with a naturalist and explore an old stagecoach route to the historic Marnach House. This three-mile round trip hike will introduce you to some of the earliest settlers of the Whitewater Valley and give you a rare look inside the stone house, which is listed on the National Historic Register. Bring transportation and a water bottle.

Snakes of the bluff lands

Saturday, August 17, 10-11 a.m.

Sixteen of Minnesota’s 17 kinds of snakes live in the bluff lands. Learn how people can live, work and recreate in the bluff lands and still conserve these awesome creatures. Bring a camera for a picture of your loved one touching a live snake!

Nature games at the beach!

Saturday, August 17, 1-2 p.m.

Hey kids! Do you like being outside and playing games? Want to get to know the wildlife of Whitewater State Park? If so, grab your parents and come to the beach for an hour of family fun!

Intro to geocaching

Saturday, August 17, 3-4:30 p.m.

Want to have some fun discovering the great sport of geocaching? (It’s like a treasure hunt using a GPS unit!) Then meet at the Nature Store with your GPS unit! If you don’t have your own, you may use one of the park’s.

The buzz on bees

Saturday, August 17, 7-8 p.m.

Did you know there are more than 20,000 bee species in the world? Minnesota alone has around 400! Come learn about these amazing little insects that play a critical role in the production of the food supply. Learn how you can help provide habitat and food sources for native bees and make your very own bee house to take home. Bring your own plastic pop/water bottle to make a recycled bee home.

Intro to trout fishing

Sunday, August 18, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Meet at the South Picnic Area for a fun time fishing. Equipment will be provided. Bring your own bait; worms often work best. Fishing licenses and trout stamps are not required when fishing during the activity. This program will be offered at Whitewater every Sunday through September 2.

Theater in the park

Sunday, August 18, 4-5 p.m.

Discover how the relationship between the people and the land in Whitewater Valley has changed over the past 200 years. Hear stories from those who actually lived, worked and played there. This play will be performed outdoors on each Sunday afternoon in August in the Meadow where the historical pageants were once held in the 1930s and 1940s. Bring a blanket to sit on. Parking is available in the Meadow lot. In case of rain, the location will be moved to the main picnic shelter.

If you need an accommodation, please contact Sara at or 507-312-2300, two weeks prior to the event. To check on program cancellations due to poor weather conditions, call the park at 507-312-2300, or go to the online state park event calendar.
