A Christmas lesson

From: Bonnie Oldham

As I sat in the audience waiting for the residents of the Sauer Memorial Home Choir to get ready for their special day of singing some very familiar Christmas songs, I watched those who prepared so hard for this special day.

Some in wheelchairs, some with walkers and some capable of walking on their own. As they took their places each singer was given a flower to be pinned on their shirt.

With smiles on their faces as they were “the guests of honor,” they paged through the prepared song sheets with time to practice one last time.

As I watched my Ma, it took me back in time to when that was us six kids on Christmas Eve at Silo Church, all excited, for our Christmas Eve program was about to begin. As we filed one by one into church singing Joy to the World, and then seeing how full the church was - standing room only - the butterflies came rushing in and you wondered would I remember my part or the words to the songs we had learned.

The anticipation that we had prepared for, for weeks was here! As we each said our part in the program my eyes would wander through the crowd of people seated until I found my Ma and Dad, and the smiles on their faces let you know how proud they were of all six of us.

Today I sat in the audience and watched as these wonderful moms and dads now full of butterflies prepared to sing for us, their children, family friends, or other residents on this, their special day. There was Away In A Manger, Silent Night, Jingle Bells and as they sang I held back tears, for it was now me watching my Mom that had once curled my hair, made my dress and shined the black patent leather shoes on that very special night.

These people who made our world a far better place to live, people who knew what hard work was and are so very special. I only hope I can someday be as important and loved as they are. The workers at Sauer showed me how much they care about each of them. Outstanding job to each of you!

Over the last ten years I have come to realize there is nothing more important than our parents, or families, or friends. For without them there is very little left. For it is these people who have proven you can’t destroy love. Mainly because they are love. If you take time to see through their eyes the joys you brought to them, the times they held you when you were sick or hurting, the laughter in the homes, their faith and love that never stopped, you can almost see a bit of heaven right here on earth!

If I could have one gift for Christmas it would be having them both home with us again.

Thank you Sauer Memorial for loving all of them. God bless you all.
