Do the right thing for the planet

On Thursday, February 21, the question of the Daley Farms’ variance application will be discussed at a community meeting at the Tau Center at 1 p.m. There will be time for public comment.

The specifics of their request have been well reported but what’s the big picture?

The “Book Doughnut Economics” offers a brilliant look at the relationship of the economy and planetary health. It gives some hope for planetary survival, even though it’s hard to keep a candle lit in that realm these days. We are getting so close to the tipping point for sustaining civilized life on this Earth, but those in power step away from, and even in front of, solutions.

Children — children! — as young as 12 are rising up and have filed a lawsuit declaring that the government is not protecting their right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness by failing to make policy and take action to stop the degradation of the planet.

The World Health Organization reports that between 1994 and 2006 the number of children with chronic disease has risen from 12.8 percent to 26.6 percent — it has more than doubled in only a 12-year period. Thirty-three percent of those diseases are caused directly by environmental problems. What might the numbers be now, 13 years later?

It will take millions of good decisions, one at a time, to provide our children and grandchildren a safe home. We are facing one now. Winona Counties’ water quality is at stake. Containment facilities only function until they don’t. Runoff has unique access to groundwater in this county via a multitude of sinkholes that open into an underground warren of streams.

We can make one good decision, now, here in Winona County.

Let’s do it.
